Stress is something most of us have limited control over. What we CAN control, however, is our knowledge on what stress does to our body when in that state.

I would like to introduce you to the little hormone your body produces when its stressed — it's called cortisol.

In short spurts cortisol can boost your immunity by limiting inflammation. Over time, however, your body can get used to having too much cortisol present in your bloodstream. This opens the door for more inflammation, as extended amounts of cortisol suppress the body's immune system.

In other words, being stressed about getting sick or catching a cold, will actually increase the likelihood of you getting sick or catching a cold.

I am aware that telling someone "not to stress" is just like telling someone to "calm down" — it often has the opposite effect.

However, if you catch yourself feeling stressed or overwhelmed, ensure you have some techniques in place to help combat those feelings.

These techniques could include: Tips for relieving stress

  • checking in with a friend
  • getting some exercise and/or sunshine
  • practice deep breathing
  • eating something healthy
  • having a 'social media free' day.
