Australian National Age and Open Swimming Championships Wrap Up

In April, twenty of Macquarie University’s talented age and open level squad swimmers arrived on the Gold Coast, to compete against the best in Australia, at the highly anticipated Australian National Age and Open Championships.

During the two-week long competitions, Team Macquarie University (MQU) competed in a mammoth 58 races, producing a 90% Personal Best rate. Racing in seven highly competitive club relays, and one NSW selective State relay, our team held their own against the best in the country, with swimmers achieving numerous team PBs.

Our swimmers raced with determination and resilience facing many challenges along the way. Teaching swimmers to face challenges head on, even in the face of adversity is no easy feat. The sportsmanship and support displayed throughout the team was unmatched and commented on by several elite coaches of other swimming clubs.

It’s moments like these that make twelve months of hard work worth it. Seeing our athletes encouraging, supporting, striving for, and achieving excellence instills a strong sense of pride in the team.

Team MQU came away with the following results:

  • 2 x Gold Medalists
  • 1 x Silver Medalist
  • 6 x Top Ten Finalists
  • 2 athletes selected onto NSW State Squads

It was an incredible two weeks of racing, with athletes producing their strongest and fastest race plans. Executing crucial racing skills at the right moment and reaching their peak strength and speed allowed these swimmers to compete at their best. This is the most successful Nationals Campaign team MQU has had.

I am so proud of the whole MQU National Team, athletes, parents, team managers, and coaches. Without you, all of this wouldn’t be possible. Thank you for all your hard work, both in the lead up to this competition and the many, many hours spent on pool deck during the competition.

Congratulations team MQU, bring on 2025!
