Learn and develop your swimming abilities

Whether you're new to the water or want to develop your technique and fitness, Macquarie has a swimming program for you.

Our programs span all ages and abilities – from babies through to adults:

  • Current enrolments - log in to the online portal to manage your current enrollments/bookings.
  • New enrolments - please contact us to find out whether you require an assessment or if you're ready to enrol.
    • The following age-based beginner levels can be booked without an assessment. If you/your child have previous swimming experience, please contact us to book an assessment.
      • Fairy Penguin 6-18 months
      • Emperor Penguin 18 months – 3 years
      • Manta Ray 3-8 years
      • Teen Beginner 9-17 years
      • Swimming Basics 18 years+

All participants in Macquarie University Sport and Aquatic Centre (MUSAC) learn to swim programs are agreeing to adhere to the terms and conditions and replacement session policy.

At MUSAC we:

  • Allow you to track your child's progress through the online portal

Our facilities

Our learn to swim programs are largely delivered in our indoor 25m learn to swim pool. However, from time to time, some of our more advanced programs may be delivered in the shallow end of our outdoor 50m Olympic pool.

Programs for kids

Our learn to swim programs build essential water safety skills. We currently have programs available for:

  • babies and infants (6 months–3 years)
  • pre-school (3–5 years)
  • school-age (5–10 years)
  • stroke development (5–12 years)

Our streamlined Teen Program offers three levels for children aged 9 - 17 years:

This class is for beginner students who are learning the fundamentals for floating, kicking and coordination of arms and legs in the water.

Teen Intermediate

10 - 17 years old

30-minute classes

6 students: 1 instructor ratio

This class is for students who have completed the beginner skills, for introductory Freestyle and back kick. In this level the student are introduced to Freestyle breathing, Backstroke as well as basics of Breaststroke and Butterfly.

Teen Advanced

12 - 17 years old

45-minute classes

8 students: 1 instructor ratio

This class is for students who have completed the intermediate skills, for Freestyle, Backstroke as well as introduction to Breaststroke and Butterfly. In this level the students work on the technique of Breaststroke and Butterfly as well as their endurance in Freestyle and Backstroke.

Programs for adults

We offer a variety of swimming options across our programs and booking spaces.

Our comprehensive swim program is registered with Swim Australia and delivered by Austswim and Senior First Aid qualified instructors. We offer four adult swim programs:

  • Swimming basics - for those learning to swim.
  • Stroke extension - the progression from basics where you build freestyle and backstroke skills.
  • Swim fit -  for competent swimmers who can perform at least 50m of freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke non-stop.
  • Swim safe program - for Macquarie University international students new to Australian waters.

Our learn to swim adult programs start with swimming basics, leading to stroke extension, then stroke correction and fitness.

Swimming Basics

30-minute classes

Available Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday

5 students: 1 teacher ratio

This is where your swimming journey all starts. You will:

  • master being comfortable in the water
  • gain understanding of how your body moves through the water, including floating, gliding, and breath control technique
  • start the basics of freestyle and build to the introduction of backstroke.

Stroke Extension

30-minute classes

Available Monday, Tuesday and Thursday

5 students: 1 teacher ratio

Build on your freestyle and backstroke skills. In Stroke Extension you will:

  • master breathing techniques that work for you, enabling you to swim continuously
  • build strength and coordination through the extension of backstroke drills
  • introduce complementary swimming skills (great for core strength and building those abs).

Our swim safe program is available to Macquarie University international students.

The theory in this course will help you identify risks, hazards and dangers in all aquatic environments.

  • Duration - 5-week program (1 day per week)
  • Cost: $10 - payable upon online enrolment
  • Includes -  basic swimming skills and water safety knowledge that are essential in or around Australia's waterways.

Practical components will help you learn basic swimming skills and water safety knowledge in time for Summer.

Facilitated by our trained Swim School staff, the goal of this program is to help international students develop not only knowledge, but confidence. Bookings are required, so please fill in the form below to request a spot.
