National Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week will run from Friday 27th May – Friday 3rd June 2022 and this year’s theme is “Be Brave. Make Change”
It is a challenge to all Australians— individuals, families, communities, organizations, and government—to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians.
On Tuesday 31st May from 12pm – 2pm, Macquarie University will host an event of celebration and conversation to explore this theme – including a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony by Chris Tobin, performance by Kiris An Taran - Torres Strait Island Dance Troupe and a truth telling panel where we will explore what reconciliation and 'Be Brave, Make Change' means for the panel and attendees. There will also be several stall holders featuring Aboriginal organisations, a live mural creation and fundraising for Macquarie’s Indigenous Student Association. Click here to learn more and register for the event.
MUSAC and Macquarie University are committed to supporting, acknowledging, and celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Click here to read the University Reconciliation Statement and Indigenous Strategy.
In January 2020 MUSAC and Campus Life, in collaboration with the Macquarie University Indigenous unit, Walanga Muru, started a journey to better understand the culture of the custodians of the land on which our campus stands.
We looked at the multiple programs, services, and facilities we operate, including the Sport and Aquatic Centre, to consider how we could acknowledge the traditional custodians of the Dharug Nation.
This journey resulted in many discussions, the commitment to and completion of Manawari Training and ultimately, the gifting and use of the Burrumering and its installation across three murals at MUSAC.
The Burrumering’s representation and meaning for the Darug people and other Aboriginal peoples and clans along the east coast of NSW aligned with Campus Life’s values and made its gifting even more special and fitting.
In 2022 MUSAC will continue its phased rollout of new staff and team uniforms, which incorporate the artwork and design of the Burrumering (view the Learn to Swim Instructor Rash Shirt here, which was rolled out in 2021).
Pride Month
June is Pride Month – and Pride month is our chance to reflect on what inclusion means to us and how we can all make a difference.
We stand in support with the LGBTQ+ community each and every day, and work to create a safe and welcoming environment for the LGBTQ+ community. Throughout June 2022, MUSAC will host several themed Group Fitness classes and have a rainbow balloon arch in support of Pride Month.
At MUSAC and Campus Life we are committed to providing a safe, fun, and inclusive environment for all people, including those of diverse sexualities and genders. As the primary sport delivery agent on campus, being inclusive within our sport and recreation services, facilities, programs, and operations not only reflects our core values, and reflects the diversity of our students, staff, and local community.
Our LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport policy can be viewed here.
IDAHOBIT re-cap
On Wednesday 18th May MUSAC celebrated International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) by hosting a Pride themed Body Pump class.
